Naturopathy

What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy holds that the body has the power to heal itself, given the right environment. The therapies aim to create this healthy environment. They include diet and nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, tissue salts, homeopathy, flower essences, relaxation massage and aromatherapy.

Naturopathy sees illness as a disturbance in the body's normal balance. When, for whatever reason, health breaks down, naturopathy sets out to identify the underlying cause. This holistic approach to health looks at the physical, mental and emotional aspects, the function of the various body systems, as well as environmental issues.

Diagnosis is directed towards finding out why health has broken down in the first place. This is rather like piecing together a jigsaw. A naturopath aims to identify each person's strengths, weaknesses and individual needs, and to assess the quality of his or her lifestyle and environment.

Naturopathic Consultations.
During a naturopathic consultation you will need to answer many questions in order for the practitioner to establish a health history. Each question will help ascertain the underlying cause of your health problems.

The patient history, along with aids such as iris diagnosis, nail and tongue analysis will assist in assessing the current state of health as well as the progress of your treatment.

Markings and signs in the it is give a detailed picture of the integrity of the body, indicating its constitutional strengths, areas of congestion and inherited strengths and weaknesses.

The naturopath may suggest several treatment options when designing individual treatment programs. This may include nutritional advice such as dietary changes, the prescription of remedies such as herbal medicines, homeopathic preparations or nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes.

For example herbal remedies may be prescribed to help restore normal functioning of the body in conditions such as: recurring infections, immune system depletion, digestive complaints, anxiety, depression, menstrual cycle irregularities, poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, infertility and menopausal symptoms.

Diet and nutritional advice may be given for issues such as allergies, digestive disturbances, high cholesterol, diabetes, pregnancy and weight loss.

Natural Remedies and Your Child.
No matter how well you care for your child, all babies and young children are susceptible to a wide range of illnesses. This is where natural therapies come to the rescue. They are safe, gentle, effective and can help to bring relief from most common childhood illnesses while encouraging a speedy recovery. Natural remedies not only soothe the symptoms but actually stimulate the body's own natural healing powers to restore vitality and generally enhance resistance to other illnesses.

Having a young child of my own, I have personally seen the value of natural medicines in safely and effectively helping young children when they are ill. Some areas of experience include:
· asthma
· allergies
· recurring infections
· digestive disturbances
· skin problems such as eczema and rashes
· behavioural problems such as autism and ADD/ADHD.

Women's Health.
Herbs help the body get back in balance. Many herbs help to normalize hormone function, relieve tension, pain and irritability. Women of all ages will benefit from using herbs to encourage their body back to health.

The food we eat also plays a big part on our health. It may not provide all the nutrients our body and brain needs to work effectively. Many women's health issues are caused by a lack of proper nutrients.

Lifestyle also plays a big part in every woman's health. Factors such as how we respond to stress, our energy levels and how much exercise we take all have a major effect on our bodies and in turn our hormone levels. Relaxation will help to relieve stress and tension. A relaxing bath, yoga and meditation are all good forms of relaxation and will benefit every women's health issue.

Each person will need a different treatment plan depending on their health issues, diet and lifestyle. Some of my greatest successes have been in helping women manage conditions such as:

· fatigue and stress
· anxiety & depression
· digestive complaints and IBS
· polycystic ovaries
· endometriosis
· infertility
· pregnancy and pre-pregnancy health
· menopause
· weight loss.

Ear Candling.

Ear candling is a natural way to clean out accumulated wax from the ears.  It is a painless, harmless and totally relaxing experience.  Ear candles are custom designed from natural fibres and tapered to precise specifications.  Through a process called convection, heat and smoke enter the sinuses from the ear candle to soften waxes and toxins.  They are then drawn out of the ear, and the debris collects in the candle.  Ear candling dates back to the year 2500BC, and many people are now rediscovering the value of ear candlng to cleanse the ear canal and sinus passages.

Ear candling can benefit almost everyone, from infants to adults.  Benefits include:
  • removal of excessive ear wax
  • improved mental clarity
  • relief from vertigo
  • regulation of ear pressure
  • better lymphatic circulation
  • balancing of ear fluids
  • relief from sinus and sinus headaches
  • relief from tinnitus
Treatment cost:  $50

Detox Foot Spa Treatments.

Heavy metals and chemical toxins weaken the body's systems and cause increased vulnerability to viruses and infections.  In an attempt to detoxify these substances, our bowels, kidneys and liver are being overloaded.  With proper use, foot detox treatments can significantly aid the body in the removal of harmful toxins.  Treatments can improve your chances for long term wellness.

The ultimate benefit and very purpose of using detox foot treatments is to assist the body in removing unwanted toxins.  Detoxing can protect our body's defences from toxic overload allowing it to protect you from illness.  Only your immune system can repair, heal and cure illness and disease.

Healthy body cells and tissues have balanced proportions of positive and negative ions.  The detox foot spa helps remove harmful toxins so your body can rebalance itself.  Place your feet in the foot spa and watch the water darken.  After a relaxing, pain-free 30 minute treatment, you will feel invigorated and have a sense of wellbeing.  The feet have an enormous number of pores - in the order of 2000 in each foot - and thus offer a point of application that is both efficient and convenient.  The body uses these pores in the skin to dispose of some unwanted substances and toxins.

During the treatment you will notice progressive changes in the colour of the water.  This is perfectly normal and happens mostly due to electrolyte reaction between the metallic array and saline solution.  You may also see some deposits floating in the water.

Treatment cost: $30 (1/2 hr treatment)

Recommended treatment is once a week for 6 weeks then once a month for three months as follow up.

My Journey has been quite varied so far - but has allowed me to learn from a variety of experiences along the way.  I began studying science after high school - and have a Master's degree in biotechnology.  I worked in research for a while, then moved onto tertiary level teaching and then into the pharmaceutical industry.  It was during this time I found my real interest was in working with people directly to improve their health in a supportive, holistic way.  It was then I began my work as a Naturopath.
