Practitioner Feature: Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, Iridology, Nutrition, Reiki, Hot stone massage My Journey has been quite varied so far – but has allowed me to learn from a variety of experiences along the way. I began studying science after high school – and have a Master’s degree in biotechnology. I worked in research for a while, then moved onto tertiary level teaching and then into the pharmaceutical industry. It was during this time I found my real interest was in working with people directly to improve their health in a supportive, holistic way. It was then I began my real work – as a Naturopath. Naturopathy holds that the body has the power to heal itself, given the right environment. The therapies aim to create this healthy environment. They include diet and nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, tissue salts, homeopathy, and flower essences. Naturopathy sees illness as a disturbance in the body’s normal balance. When, for whatever reason, health breaks down, naturopathy sets out to identify the underlying cause. This holistic approach to health looks at the physical, mental and emotional aspects, the function of the various body systems, as well as environmental issues. Diagnosis is directed towards finding out why health has broken down in the first place. This is rather like piecing together a jigsaw. A naturopath aims to identify each person’s strengths, weaknesses and individual needs, and to assess the quality of his or her lifestyle and environment. My main interest is in Women’s and Children’s health. Having a young child of my own, I have personally seen the value of natural medicines in safely and effectively helping young children when they are ill. I also have a great love for animals and have recently broadened my services to include natural therapies for pets (nutrition, herbs, flower essences, homeopathy and reiki). Wishing you health and happiness, Sylvia | Cassandra Sullivan Acupuncture Dispelling the Acupuncture=Pain myth. The word Acupuncture sums brings up many different ideas and images for different people. There is the vision of a Voodoo practitioner with their pins and cloth dolls, Bad kung fu movies where 'acupuncture points' are used to paralyse or even to cause death in their opponents, or even health insurance commercials, where a young man walks from his treatment room covered head to toe in needles. Then there is the dreaded association with hypodermic needles or 'shots' from the general practitioner, as they are more commonly known. Unfortuantely, and I'm sorry to dissapoint you all, none of the above are accurate depictions of Acupuncture. My name is Cassandra Sullivan and I have been interested in complimentary and natural healing since the age of thirteen, which led me down many paths including meditation, reiki and exploring Goddess energy. My path eventually led me to Acupuncture and I had a feeling of coming home to a practice that felt completely natural to me. I completed my course at Victoria University in January 2008 and became a registered acupuncturist in February 2008. My motivation as an Acupuncture practitioner is to work with people and allow them to come to a full realisation of who they are as a person. My method of treatment involves working with the personal beliefs and way of being with each person and integrating those into their treatment. I don't believe in trying to change people, but in working with what people have and enhancing that to allow them to feel as comfortable and as happy as possible. Sending someone away feeling happy and better about themselves as a person is ultimately my goal. Acupuncture involves using the meridian systems in your body to bring balance back to the organ systems and to your internal energy using acupuncture points which a located along each meridian. These points are where the energy of each meridian is closest to the surface of the body and each point can actually be measured on an electrical unit. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine see the body as containing a reflection and balance of heaven and earth energy and uses terms from nature and the natural world in its descriptions of imbalance and illness.in chinese theory it is believed that each person contains their own little universe inside their body and sometimes, the universe can be thrown out of whack or into complete disarray. It is through creating balnce and bringing harmony back to the intenal systems of the body as a whole that illness and 'dis' 'ease' can be released. I believe that Acupuncture should not be a painful experience and as I am more of a gentle person, my treatments will reflect this. Acupuncture is a beautiful and often unusual experience that allows you to become more aware of your body as a whole and can treat a wide range of ailments including stress, sleep issues, headache, digestive issues, musculoskeletal issues and many other issues. I am here to dispell the myth that Acupuncture is a painful experience and that needles can be our friends! I do not believe in creating any more pain in a person who is already experiencing a significant amount of pain. One lot of pain is enough for anyone! Cassie | Nikki Medium, Crystal Healing, Ear Candling Greetings to all, I am Nikki! I am sure you have heard the story of a psychic child. Scared of the dark, never wanting to fall asleep in fear of all the faces that would appear. Talking to faeries and imaginary friends, collecting rocks and looking after plants and animals. Yes that was my childhood. Not too much has changes except now I get out of bed and have a conversation with faces that appear to me. I still talk to the faeries, infact they have brought to me great healing techniques that I pass on to who ever asks and my imaginary friends are my spirit guides, who are loving wonderful energies that guide me through each life experience. I still collect rocks but they are called crystals and looking after plants and animals, well you should see my home. Since childhood I have recognized my ability to connect in with energies of all kinds. With this I have offered guidance and/or healing to many people, animals and the earth. Mother Earth has called us all to help with the healing process! I quickly discovered that the beginning of my journey was to speak for those who have crossed over, for who would speak for them. They had a lot to say especially if their departure was sudden, though as the years past I learnt that most of our loved ones just wanted to help us with our own healing and evolution. The love and knowledge that they will bring to us is amazing, if we are willing to listen. The main thing I have learnt through my spirit teachings is that all is love and through love anything is possible. Yes life can definately be quite challenging but when we get through it we can come out with higher knowledge and strength that is very empowering. With balance and understanding I can live my enlightened path.My strong connection to Mother Earth and her indigenous children drew me towards the healing benefits of crystals and ear candling. Both provide a most gentle and loving alternative for your general health and wellbeing.Through successfully mastering Melody’s Love is in the Earth Crystal Healing Therapy I am able to offer simple but effective techniques that will help cleanse and balance your chakra’s and neutralize negative energy that will bring great relief to daily stresses.Ear Candling is an ancient tradition, used by the Egyptians and then adopted by the North American Indians. It is a relaxing technique that will remove toxins from the gum, jaw and sinuses. It will relieve excess ear wax, earaches, certain headaches, tinnitus, hearing difficulties, vertigo, swimmers ear or whenever an imbalance of pressure has occurred.I now have created the wonderful products that are Earth Spirit. With the guidance of spirit I designed and made a version of an old tradition that are smudge sticks. I chose lavender because of the natural cleansing properties. All the herbs are organically and holistically grown then made with crystal essence and affirmations to cleanse and transmute negative or old energy. All creams, milk baths, sprays & oils are made in the same process to offer maximum cleansing and balancing to ones energy for total stress relief. All products made with love & light Just for you! Love and Blessings to all! Nikki (Earth Spirit products are available at The Centre for mind, body & spirit.) www.earthspirit.net.au | Loretta Georgiou Reflexologist I have worked many years in the medical and surgical profession as a practice manager/personal assistant. I was introduced to reflexology as a client for student clinics. After a few years of attending as a client, I took the step to study for two years to complete a reflexology course withAustralianSchool of Reflexology & Relaxation whilst working full time. I completed the course in May 2008, with the decision made to step into complimentary therapies I am now setting up my practice in reflexology. I have a deep belief that reflexology will benefit many from relaxation through to relief of many health conditions. Reflexology is based on the principles that we have reflexes on our feet and hands that correspond to all our body parts, organs and glands. By working any congested or tender reflexes on the feet using fingers and thumbs, the pathways are opened up to allow blood, oxygen and nutrients to flow and bring about balance and harmony to the body which then enables the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Proven benefits from reflexology are: - Relaxation Response: When the body is in a relaxed state, many physiological changes take place in the body which allows reduction in stress.
- Endorphin Release: These chemicals are the body’s natural pain killers. Reflexology allows “feel good” substances to be released into the blood stream and relief of pain can be achieved.
- Increased Circulation: Direct pressure on the feet and hands increases better blood flow. This tends to warm the extremities, helps nutrients get to the cells and takes away waste products. It also moves more oxygen into the cells where it is needed.
- Nerve Stimulation: Direct stimulation on the feet or hands puts pressure on the many thousands of nerve endings. This feels incredibly relaxing.
- Benefit of Touch: Touch is a basic human need and being nurtured and touched increases one’s sense of well being.
Reflexology is offered to all ages, for relaxation and for many health conditions to promote better health and well being through this wonderfully relaxing complementary therapy. I offer a service of professional quality and confidentiality. “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same” (Nelson Mandella) | Mary Tobin Meditation facilitator When first considering doing a profile of myself for the web-site I was in a quandary as to how to present myself to you. At first I thought I would write about the wonderful health benefits of meditation and the experience of inner-peace and serenity. Then I had an inspirational flash that instructed me to tell you about myself and the journey that has brought me thus far. I was raised in an Irish Catholic family with seven brothers and sisters. I was child number five. My parents raised me to have a deep faith in God and the Catholic Church, and they themselves displayed a deep faith in an unseeable deity. I was deeply moved by the parables, and the story of Jesus, and I knew deep within that there was a God. I was to go to church every Sunday, (without question or all hell would break loose), until I was about 17, when it became really uncool to go to church, plus by that time I had lost any interest in The Church and its teachings, although I still had a firm belief in a higher power. At around about 14 years of age, I was visited by an angelic presence. Its visitation, to this day has left me in no doubt that angels and a higher love do exist. I still draw on the memory of that visitation when I need to feel uplifted. In my early twenties I read my first 500 page novel, called ‘The Clan of The Cave Bear’ by Jean M. Auel. It was about a young girl in prehistoric times, who through a tragic earthquake lost her whole tribe and was left to die, until she was found and raised by ‘The Others’. This book changed my life and spoke to some innate knowledge within me that told me of our deep connection to the earth; it gave me a deep respect for herbs and nature. I later studied ‘Health and Nutrition’ at The Southern School of Natural Therapies, which included a whole semester on herbs and vitamins. I was in my element. I also was aware of a deep respect I had (and still have) for the original keepers of this land – The Aborigines or Koori Nation. I was always fascinated by the deep wisdom they displayed and how they respected and treated Mother Earth. I have always felt that humanity has much to learn from the ancient ones on how to live in harmony and balance with Mother Earth. This has led me to explore Shamanic teachings of The Native American Indians, and Earth Centred Religions of Paganism and Wicca. In 1991 I was living in Darwin, and noticed an advertisement in the local paper for a 10 week massage course. This again, was to be life altering, as it introduced me to the concept of body-mind. That is, that our mind has a direct affect on our body, and the way we hold our bodies has a direct affect on our mind. Also, all of our life experience is felt within our bodies, if for some reason we are unable to express all of our emotions in relation to an event, then this emotion can become stored and trapped within our bodies. This is why some bodily pain and tension may not be due to a physical stress but an emotional stress. Deep tissue massage using breath work can help with unlocking this. At some point, and I am unsure when, I began to explore meditation. I dabbled. It was not something I did regularly, but it was something that I thoroughly enjoyed, and perhaps I was a little unsure of exploring my inner world. Perhaps, a little afraid of the unknown. In 1998 I completed my Massage Therapist Certificate at The Southern School of Natural Therapies and began practising massage. I worked with massage therapy over a period of 8 years, until one day I felt burnt out and withdrew from the field. Still, I had a passion to help people, but it needed to be embracing my spiritual nature in some form. That’s when I was introduced to The Inner Peace Institute for Well-Being. They were running a teacher training course in Meditation, and I enrolled. It was quite possibly the most inspiring course I have ever undertaken. 18 months of intense soul-searching and meditation. 18 months with 18 other students. We grew together. We were inspired together. We learnt structure and form, and how to facilitate groups of people. We explored spirituality on a global scale. All forms, all religions. In January 2006 I gave birth to my beautiful daughter. During the pregnancy I read every book I could on the stages of pregnancy and giving birth. I dearly wanted this birthing experience to be beautiful, and as luck or fate would have it, I was introduced to a mid-wife who was trained in the Hypno-Birthing technique. I was able to draw on my meditation experience and incorporate hypno-birthing during a 16 hour labour. I was blessed to have a drug-free natural birth and a beautiful healthy child. My life so far has been one of intense soul-seeking, looking for answers. I am a Reiki channel, I work with crystals, I studied reflexology, and I even did a course entitled ‘I could do anything if only I knew what it was’. I studied music, I began singing, I dearly wanted to be a rock chick in a band, I love to sing. Talk about the voice, and that’s a whole other subject. Now, I am finally embracing and channelling my spiritual nature via facilitating Meditation Classes at The Centre for Mind Body and Spirit. I am able to draw on the wealth of knowledge that I have accumulated over my wonderful journey through life and share it with others. I am in the right place for me right now. And I continue to grow.
