Naturopathy

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy holds that the body has the power to heal itself, given the right environment. The therapies aim to create this healthy environment. They include diet and nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, tissue salts, homeopathy, flower essences, relaxation massage and aromatherapy.

Naturopathy sees illness as a disturbance in the body's normal balance. When, for whatever reason, health breaks down, naturopathy sets out to identify the underlying cause. This holistic approach to health looks at the physical, mental and emotional aspects, the function of the various body systems, as well as environmental issues. Diagnosis is directed towards finding out why health has broken down in the first place. This is rather like piecing together a jigsaw. A naturopath aims to identify each person's strengths, weaknesses and individual needs, and to assess the quality of his or her lifestyle and environment.

Naturopathic Consultations:  During a naturopathic consultation you will need to answer many questions in order to establish a health history. Each question will help ascertain the underlying cause of your health problems. The patient history, along with aids such as iris diagnosis, nail and tongue analysis will assist in assessing the current state of health as well as the progress of your treatment. Markings and signs in the iris give a detailed picture of the integrity of the body, indicating its constitutional strengths, areas of congestion and inherited strengths and weaknesses.

I may suggest several treatment options when designing individual treatment programs. This may include nutritional advice such as dietary changes, the prescription of remedies such as herbal medicines, homeopathic preparations or nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes. For example herbal remedies may be prescribed to help restore normal functioning of the body in conditions such as:

  • recurring infections

  • immune system depletion

  • digestive complaints

  • anxiety, depression

  • menstrual cycle irregularities

  • poly-cystic ovarian syndrome

  • infertility and

  • menopausal symptoms.

Diet and nutritional advice may be given for issues such as allergies, digestive disturbances, high cholesterol, diabetes, pregnancy and weight loss.

Natural Remedies and Your Child:  No matter how well you care for your child, all babies and young children are susceptible to a wide range of illnesses. This is where natural therapies come to the rescue. They are safe, gentle, effective and can help to bring relief from most common childhood illnesses while encouraging a speedy recovery. Natural remedies not only soothe the symptoms but actually stimulate the body's own natural healing powers to restore vitality and generally enhance resistance to other illnesses. Having a young child of my own, I have personally seen the value of natural medicines in safely and effectively helping young children when they are ill. Some areas of experience include:

  • asthma

  • allergies

  • recurring infections

  • digestive disturbances

  • skin problems such as eczema and rashes

  • behavioural problems such as autism and ADD/ADHD.

Women's Health:  Herbs help the body get back in balance. Many herbs help to normalize hormone function, relieve tension, pain and irritability. Women of all ages will benefit from using herbs to encourage their body back to health. The food we eat also plays a big part on our health. It may not provide all the nutrients our body and brain needs to work effectively. Many women's health issues are caused by a lack of proper nutrients. Lifestyle also plays a big part in every woman's health. Factors such as how we respond to stress, our energy levels and how much exercise we take all have a major effect on our bodies and in turn our hormone levels. Relaxation will help to relieve stress and tension. A relaxing bath, yoga and meditation are all good forms of relaxation and will benefit every women's health issue. Each person will need a different treatment plan depending on their health issues, diet and lifestyle. Some areas of expertise have been in helping women manage conditions such as:

  • fatigue and stress

  • anxiety & depression

  • digestive complaints and IBS

  • polycystic ovaries

  • endometriosis

  • infertility

  • pregnancy and pre-pregnancy health

  • menopause

  • weight loss.
